Voronoi

Project Brief- To focus on the production of architectural effects through the design and fabrication of storage solutions for the Woonsocket Family Shelter. In economic times where the population of homeless individuals and families in the United States has increased, the Woonsocket Family Shelter provides a place for families in finding the first steps towards a new home. Artifacts are personal objects that are the ultimate contact residents have with their previous lives. Their use of storage is a protocol, the residents integration into their new shelter as well as a sign of identification of their new lives.

Studio: Housing Affects with Eduardo Duarte
Project Duration: 4 Months
Completed: February 2013

The room in the shelter had no storage system and objects were precariously piled on top of each other. The residents required a storage system that organized their belongings.

Playing around with the software program Grasshopper, I discovered Voronoi diagrams which are a way to subdivide space systematically. Along with possessing structural properties, Voronoi diagrams’ resemblance to natural formations add life to the homeless shelter, making it one with nature.

It is interesting to see the transition from the computer model to the final Masonite installation on site.
